Winter events (December–February)
Winter is festive but relatively calm. Crowds are lighter than summer, hotel rates can be lower outside the holidays, and many events are free.
- Holiday lights: neighborhoods, parks and attractions light up from late November through December. Our guide to Christmas lights in San Diego lists the best displays.
- Boat parades: decorated boats cruise the bay and Mission Bay on select December evenings; the waterfront along the Embarcadero is a popular viewing spot.
- New Year’s Eve: celebrations take place downtown, in the Gaslamp Quarter, at hotels and on the waterfront.
- Whale season: gray whales migrate past San Diego in winter. See whale watching in San Diego.
- Golf: the PGA Tour’s annual San Diego stop is traditionally played at Torrey Pines Golf Course in late January or February.
- Restaurant deals: San Diego Restaurant Week has often been held in winter, sometimes with a second edition in fall.

December Nights in Balboa Park
December Nights is one of San Diego’s longest-running holiday traditions. Typically held over the first weekend of December, it fills Balboa Park’s El Prado with lights, music, international food booths and extended museum hours.
- Getting there: parking is limited, so organizers usually recommend shuttles or transit.
- Arrive early: the festival can draw very large crowds, especially on Saturday evening.
- Details: check balboapark.org for this year’s dates and transit information.
Spring events (March–May)
Spring brings festivals, sunshine and the start of baseball season.
- St. Patrick’s Day: a parade and festival have traditionally been held in or near Balboa Park, with celebrations across the Gaslamp.
- Padres Opening Day: the baseball season starts at Petco Park, usually in late March or early April.
- Crew Classic: collegiate and club rowing regattas on Mission Bay, typically in early April.
- Art walks: Little Italy’s large spring art festival is usually held in late April, and many neighborhoods host their own.
- Cinco de Mayo: celebrations in Old Town and across the county around May 5.
- Wildflowers: after wet winters, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park can bloom dramatically, usually between February and April.
Sports in San Diego
Sports run all year, and most venues are easy to reach by trolley.
- Baseball: the San Diego Padres play at Petco Park in the East Village from spring through early fall. Even on non-game days, the ballpark area is lively.
- Soccer: San Diego FC joined Major League Soccer in 2025 and plays at Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley, which is also home to SDSU Aztecs football.
- Hockey and more: the San Diego Gulls (AHL) play at Pechanga Arena, and college basketball fills Viejas Arena at SDSU.
- Tickets: buy from team websites or official partners to avoid scams.

Summer events (June–August)
Summer is peak event season, with the most visitors and the highest hotel prices. Book early.
- San Diego County Fair: held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, usually from early June into early July.
- Fourth of July: fireworks over San Diego Bay, Coronado, the beaches and parks.
- Comic-Con International: typically held in July at the San Diego Convention Center.
- San Diego Pride: usually held in mid-July, with a parade through Hillcrest and a festival nearby.
- Del Mar racing: the summer thoroughbred season at Del Mar is a social tradition, usually starting in July.
- Outdoor concerts: summer series at The Rady Shell, parks, wineries and amphitheaters across the county.

Comic-Con International
Comic-Con is one of the largest pop-culture conventions in the world, typically held over four days in July. The convention center and surrounding Gaslamp and waterfront fill with panels, exhibits, off-site activations and cosplay.
- Badges: they usually sell out quickly through an online sale; check comic-con.org for the official process.
- Hotels: rates rise sharply that week. Book as early as possible, or compare areas in our where to stay in San Diego guide.
- No badge? Many off-site experiences around the Gaslamp have historically been free and open to the public.
San Diego County Fair
The fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is a classic summer outing with rides, livestock exhibits, fair food, gardens and nightly concerts at the grandstand.
- Timing: usually early June through early July; often closed on certain weekdays.
- Getting there: traffic on I-5 can be heavy, so look for official park-and-ride or transit options.
- Details: see sdfair.com for dates, hours and concert lineups.

Fourth of July in San Diego
Independence Day is one of the busiest days of the year on the coast. Fireworks shows are typically held over San Diego Bay, in Coronado, at several beaches and at theme parks, and many communities hold parades in the morning.
- Viewing: the Embarcadero, Harbor Island, Shelter Island and Coronado’s bayfront are popular spots; arrive early.
- Beaches: alcohol is banned on city beaches, and fireworks are illegal for the public across the county.
- Getting home: expect heavy traffic and crowded trolleys after the shows.
Fall events (September–November)
Fall is a local favorite: the weather is often the warmest and sunniest of the year, the ocean is at its warmest and the summer crowds are gone.
- Fleet Week: military-themed events, ship tours and community activities, usually in the fall.
- Oktoberfest: several communities and breweries host Oktoberfest events in September and October.
- Little Italy Festa: a large Italian street festival, traditionally held in October.
- Halloween: haunted attractions, pumpkin patches and costume events across the county.
- Día de los Muertos: celebrations in Old Town and other communities around November 1–2.
- Julian apple season: the mountain town of Julian is busy with apple pie and cider seekers in fall.
- Beer and food: San Diego Beer Week is usually held in November, alongside food and wine festivals.
- Holiday kickoff: tree lightings and holiday markets begin in late November.
