Who we are
San Diego Updates is an independent website about San Diego, published at sandiegoupdates.com. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean the people who run the site. You can reach us at hello@sandiegoupdates.com.
What we collect
We only collect what the site needs to work and what you choose to send us.
When you contact us
If you use the form on our contact page or email us, we receive your name, your email address and your message. The form sends that to our inbox by email.
When you leave a comment
Some posts accept comments. When you comment, WordPress stores the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, your IP address and your browser’s user agent string. We use the IP address and user agent to help spot spam.
WordPress may create a hashed version of your email address and send it to Gravatar to check whether you have a profile picture there. Gravatar’s privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture (if you have one) appears next to it.
When you browse
Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps server logs. These record things such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you request and the time of each request. They are used to keep the site running and secure.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. San Diego Updates uses only the cookies WordPress sets for its own features:
- Comment cookies. If you tick the box to save your details when commenting, WordPress stores your name, email and website in your browser for one year so you don’t have to type them again.
- Login cookies. These are set only for the people who run the site when they sign in to manage it.
We do not currently use advertising or analytics cookies. If that changes, we will update this page before it happens. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time.
Services we rely on
A few outside services help run the site, and some of them see technical information such as your IP address when you visit:
- Hostinger hosts the site and its content delivery network, and keeps the server logs described above.
- Google Fonts supplies some of the typefaces on our pages, so your browser contacts Google’s servers to load them.
- Gravatar, run by Automattic, shows profile pictures next to comments.
- WordPress, Elementor and Yoast SEO are the software the site is built on. They run on our own hosting.
Some posts link to or embed content from other websites, such as maps, videos or venue pages. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited that site directly, and that site may collect data about you under its own privacy policy.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for advertising.
How we use information
- To reply to messages, event submissions and correction requests.
- To publish and moderate comments.
- To keep the site secure and working properly.
We may also share information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Messages you send us stay in our inbox for as long as we need them to follow up. Comments and their details are kept as long as the comment stays on the site, so related replies keep making sense. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited period under its own policies.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it or ask us to delete it. Email hello@sandiegoupdates.com and tell us what you need. We may need to confirm it is really you before we act. Depending on where you live, including California, you may have extra rights under local privacy law, and we will honor them.
Children
San Diego Updates is a general audience website. It is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has sent us personal information, email hello@sandiegoupdates.com and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
