December Nights in Balboa Park 2026: dates, hours, parking and tips

Crowds under the lights in Balboa Park at night

December Nights is the City of San Diego’s free holiday festival in Balboa Park, held each year on the first Friday and Saturday of December. In 2026 it runs on December 4 and 5. The city says it draws more than 350,000 people over the two days, which makes it one of the biggest free events in the county.

Expect lit-up buildings along El Prado, music on several stages, food stalls from all over the world and museums that open free or late. Older San Diegans may still call it Christmas on the Prado, its original name.

What to expect

The festival spreads across the center of Balboa Park. Entertainment runs on several public stages, with local bands, choirs and dance groups. The city picks performers from community applications, so the lineup changes each year.

Food is a big part of the night. Vendors line the walkways with food from many cuisines, and the Japanese Friendship Garden adds its own stalls at its front gate. Lines get long after dark, so eat early or bring patience. Beer and wine are sold only in designated areas.

The buildings along El Prado are lit up for the holidays, and the walk across the Cabrillo Bridge toward the California Tower is one of the best views of the night. The San Diego History Center has a holiday display this year too: an 18-foot tree built from nearly 400 live poinsettias.

Free and late museum hours

Many Balboa Park museums stay open into the evening, and several drop their admission fees. Each museum posts its own plans, and several had not announced theirs by late October 2026. Confirmed so far:

  • San Diego Museum of Art: closed during the day, then open and free from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. both nights, with last entry at 8:45 p.m. You must check food, drinks, umbrellas, big backpacks and large bags at a tent outside. MOPA at SDMA is closed both days.
  • San Diego Air and Space Museum: open from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. both nights, with last admission at 10 p.m. Its FAQ says entry is free during December Nights.
  • Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum: free entry to the Upper Garden from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a beer and sake garden, crafts and food vendors at the front gate.
  • San Diego History Center: the poinsettia tree exhibit, with beer from AleSmith and wine for sale.

The Fleet Science Center, the Natural History Museum, the Automotive Museum, the WorldBeat Center and the International Cottages are also listed as taking part, with details to come. Check the Balboa Park December Nights page closer to the date for their hours.

Our San Diego Air and Space Museum guide has more on the galleries if you plan to go inside.

Getting there

Traffic around the park is heavy both nights, and the lots inside the park fill fast. Leave the car at home if you can.

The city’s 2026 transport details were not posted yet when we checked. In 2025, it ran these options:

  • A free event shuttle stopped at San Diego City College, 3rd Avenue and A Street downtown, and Beech Street at Kettner Boulevard in Little Italy.
  • Limited free parking at City College connected to that shuttle.
  • Rideshare drivers dropped off and picked up on both sides of Sixth Avenue near the Cabrillo Bridge, because Park Boulevard backs up badly.
  • Free bike and scooter valets sat at Park Boulevard and Village Place, and at the west entrance of the Cabrillo Bridge.
  • Paid parking was available at Inspiration Point, on Presidents Way, at the zoo, at Roosevelt Middle School and at San Diego High School.

The trolley and buses also work well. Our getting around San Diego guide covers routes, fares and rideshare tips.

Parking in 2026

Balboa Park has paid parking through December 31, 2026, so the regular rates apply on top of any event rules. Lots on the edges of the park, such as Pepper Grove, Federal and Palisades, cost $10 a day for nonresidents and are free for verified City of San Diego residents. Lots in the center of the park cost more. The city’s Balboa Park parking page has the full list.

City residents need to register online before the day to park free; the kiosks cannot check residency on the spot. Cars with a disabled person placard or plate park free in any lot.

In 2025, disabled parking for the festival was set aside off Park Boulevard at the Fleet Science Center on Space Theater Way, and at the Natural History Museum on Village Place.

Event rules

The city posts a list of rules for December Nights. The 2025 list included these:

  • Leave pets at home. Trained service animals are welcome.
  • No drones without FAA and event approval.
  • No running, skateboarding, rollerblading or biking inside the event area.
  • No scooters or other motorized devices inside the event, except for people with a mobility impairment.
  • No weapons and no smoking.
  • No alcohol except in the marked drinking areas.
  • No selling or performing without a permit.

Tips for a better night

Saturday starts at noon, so it is the best day to go with young kids. You can see the decorations and eat in daylight and leave before the biggest crowds arrive.

Friday has a shorter window, and people pour in after work, so the walkways near the Plaza de Panama fill up fast once it gets dark.

Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk on concrete, grass, dirt and asphalt, and some ground is uneven. Bring a layer too, since December evenings in San Diego often drop into the high 40s or low 50s. Our San Diego weather by month guide has averages.

Take a group photo and pick a meeting place in case someone gets lost. It also helps to snap a photo of where you parked, especially at an offsite lot.

The city and Cox run a free Wi-Fi hotspot called “Cox WiFi” in the event area, which helps when cell service slows down in the crowds.

Giving back

The city and SDG&E run a sock drive at December Nights for PATH San Diego, a nonprofit that helps unsheltered people. Bring a new pair of socks and drop them at the SDG&E booth or the other drop-off points listed on the city’s page.

Make a night of it

December Nights fits easily into a bigger holiday trip. The San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas runs its Lightscape trail through the season, and our Christmas lights in San Diego guide covers neighborhood displays and the bay boat parade.

For dinner nearby, Hillcrest, North Park and Little Italy are all close; see our best restaurants in San Diego hub.
