Rain clears out today, then a dry week

The storm that rolled in on Halloween night is still around this morning. The National Weather Service expects rain before 10 a.m., then scattered showers mostly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with a high near 69 in the city and another tenth to a quarter inch possible. Showers should end by late evening, and the rest of the week looks dry, with highs in the 70s through Friday and near 82 on Saturday.

On the water, a Small Craft Advisory covers the outer coastal waters from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. A southwest swell will keep surf at 3 to 6 feet through Monday, and with high tides just above 6 feet, forecasters say some southwest-facing beaches could see water spill over during high tide today.

If you’re heading out today, bring a rain jacket and give low spots extra room; our flooding and road alerts guide lists where to check conditions, and the November weather guide covers what the rest of the month usually looks like.

Beach closures and water advisories after the storm

As of the County’s 5 a.m. update, 10 shoreline spots are closed. Most are the usual south county sites: four stretches of Imperial Beach, including the pier, plus Border Field State Park and the Tijuana Slough shoreline. Two Silver Strand State Beach stations were added to the closed list on Oct. 30.

Another 12 sites are under bacteria advisories. They include La Jolla Cove, Children’s Pool, five Mission Bay swim areas (De Anza Cove, Leisure Lagoon, Tecolote Shores, Vacation Isle’s North Cove and Campland) and five Coronado spots. Two of those, Coronado’s main lifeguard tower and North Beach, went on the list this morning.

Plan to stay out of the water for a few days. After roughly 0.2 inch of rain or more, the County tells people to avoid ocean and bay water for 72 hours after the rain stops, and it doesn’t post signs for that advisory, so check sdbeachinfo.com before you surf or swim. Our San Diego beaches guide and Coronado guide have dry-land ideas for the same stretches of coast.

Komen walk canceled; check SR-163 before driving

Susan G. Komen called off today’s More Than Pink Walk in Balboa Park on Friday, citing the weather forecast for Sunday. Last year’s walk drew close to 10,000 people, according to CBS 8.

Caltrans had scheduled a closure of northbound SR-163 from A Street to Robinson Avenue from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. today for the walk, with drivers sent to northbound I-5 and southbound SR-163 left open. Caltrans hasn’t posted an update since the walk was canceled.

If you usually take northbound 163 through the park, look at Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) before leaving, or just use I-5. The Balboa Park guide has parking and entrance details if you’re visiting the park anyway.

Overnight freeway connector closures in East County and Clairemont

Caltrans is closing the connector from southbound SR-67 to westbound SR-52 tonight and Monday night, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., for bridge work. The posted detour takes drivers onto westbound I-8, then northbound SR-125 to SR-52.

Next Sunday, Nov. 8, the southbound I-5 connector to eastbound SR-52 closes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for roadwork. Drivers will exit at Clairemont Drive, turn left, get back on northbound I-5 and use the northbound connector to eastbound SR-52.

East County drivers out late should allow a few extra minutes. Caltrans notes these schedules can change with weather, so check QuickMap before you go. Our getting around San Diego guide covers transit options if you’d rather skip the drive.

Clocks fell back overnight

Daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m., when clocks went back to 1 a.m. Phones update on their own, but car clocks, ovens and some watches need a manual reset. NBC 7 put today’s sunrise at about 6:13 a.m. and sunset at about 5 p.m.

With darkness coming an hour earlier, drivers should watch for kids and pedestrians around school zones and bus stops in the evening. Fire departments also use the weekend as a reminder to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Clocks spring forward again on March 14, 2027.

Election Day is Tuesday: vote center hours

San Diego County’s 221 vote centers opened Saturday and run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, vote centers, official drop boxes and the Registrar of Voters office are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You can register and vote the same day at any vote center, or drop off your mail ballot there. Mailed ballots need a postmark by Nov. 3 and have to arrive within seven days. Drop-box ballots are due by 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Registrar’s online map at sdvote.com shows nearby vote centers and estimated wait times, and the Registrar recommends voting early to avoid lines. New to the area? Our living in San Diego guide covers other local basics.

Día de Muertos in Barrio Logan this afternoon

The fourth annual Día de Muertos en Barrio Logan runs from noon to 7 p.m. today on Logan Avenue between Evans and 26th streets. Entry is free and all ages are welcome. Organizers list ofrendas, art installations, youth workshops, local food and vendors, a lowrider showcase and a Catrina contest, with Neighborhood Kids headlining.

MTS lists the Blue Line trolley and bus routes 12, 901 and 929 as ways to get there, which saves you looking for parking. Showers are supposed to taper off this afternoon, but bring a light layer. More fall festivals are on our San Diego events calendar.

This week: Food + Wine Festival and a free trolley party

The San Diego Food + Wine Festival runs Nov. 1 to 8, and its events are 21 and over. The big three are at the end of the week: Icons + Legends on Friday night, Nov. 6, then the Grand Tasting on Saturday, Nov. 7, and the Grand Fiesta on Sunday, Nov. 8, both at Embarcadero Marina Park North. General admission for the weekend tastings runs noon to 3 p.m.

Also on Saturday, MTS and SANDAG are marking five years of the Mid-Coast Trolley extension with a free celebration at the UC San Diego Central Campus station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. MTS says people going to the event can ride the Blue Line free both ways, and food truck coupons and tote bags will be handed out while they last.

For the Embarcadero events, the trolley and rideshare save you from hunting for waterfront parking. Our events this weekend page has more picks for Nov. 7 and 8.
